A Toothache Tells You It’s Too Late
Like a jilted lover’s heartache, a toothache tells you it’s too late. By the time you feel a toothache, often damage has been done that will need extra work to fix. That’s because the nerves in your tooth are present only in the hollow core or pulp of your tooth. A cavity, which is caused by bacteria, typically has to burrow through the outside of the tooth and reach the interior of the tooth before you feel any pain, because the exterior of your tooth has no nerves. So, the infection reaching your pulp chamber not only causes pain but infects that area. To fix this means a root canal, if the tooth is savable, or even an extraction if it is not. Furthermore, since the pulp of your tooth is connected to the rest of your head and body by blood vessels as well as nerves, the infection can spread all around your body and in the worst scenario can kill you. Happily, a toothache and its associated infection can be avoided very simply by taking care of your teeth. Which means brushing twice a day for a full minute, flossing or water picking, eating less frequently and less soda, sticky candies and carbs, and importantly visiting a dentist twice a year for checkups and adult cleanings. Just like a jilted lover who wishes he had showered his girl with more attention before being left at the altar, being proactive and caring about your teeth from the get-go will prevent …toothache…down the road.
